When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and is a movable national holiday in Angola. It falls two days before Western Easter Sunday. Christianity has deep historical roots in parts of Angola, including the Kongo kingdom’s engagement with Christianity from the late fifteenth century, followed by Catholic missions, Protestant churches and independent congregations.

Contemporary services may include scripture, prayer, processions, choirs or quieter reflection, depending on denomination and locality. Angola also includes people of other religions and people who do not observe the feast. The legal day off and personal religious participation are therefore separate matters, and practice in Luanda should not be generalised across the country.

Law 12/23 normally gives employees the right not to work on a national holiday without losing ordinary pay. Continuous operations and situations permitting overtime can remain active under the Labour Law, so health care, transport, security and other rostered services do not necessarily close. Law 11/18 also creates a compensated ‘bridge’ whenever a national holiday falls on Tuesday or Thursday: work is suspended on the preceding Monday or following Friday, and the preceding week’s daily schedule is lengthened by ninety minutes. It does not generally move Sunday holidays to Monday.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Family and community

Christian families may attend worship, reduce ordinary festivities and prepare together for Easter Sunday. Practices vary across provinces, languages, churches, generations and individual households.

  • Public life

Catholic and Protestant congregations may organise processions, scripture, prayer or choral services according to local practice. The scale and form of official or community events are announced locally and change by year.

  • Work and travel

Confirm intercity travel, shops and services during the Easter weekend, especially for operations staffed by shifts. Continuous operations and shift workers can follow separate arrangements under the General Labour Law.
