When is Boxing Day?

In 2026, Boxing Day falls on Saturday, December 26, 2026. It is an Antigua and Barbuda public holiday. Public offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Boxing Day

Boxing Day follows Christmas Day and extends Antigua and Barbuda’s statutory year-end break. Its name came through British and Commonwealth custom and is commonly associated with gifts or boxes for workers and people in need, although the exact historical origin is debated. In local life, December 26 matters less as an abstract British survival than as practical time for households, hospitality workers and relatives whose Christmas schedules differed.

The second holiday allows meals, visits and music to continue without requiring every reunion to fit into December 25. Some people rest after cooking or hosting, while others travel between villages, meet friends, visit a beach or enjoy organised entertainment. Leftover ham, breads, cakes and other Christmas food can return to the table, making Boxing Day a continuation of household hospitality rather than a separate feast with one required menu.

Government guidance lists December 26 as a public holiday and explains the combined weekend rule. When Christmas falls on Saturday, the following Monday becomes public, protecting Boxing Day after Sunday. When Christmas falls on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are public holidays. The calculator therefore keeps December 26 as the historical Boxing Day and adds an observed date only where the statutory pattern requires one.

How Boxing Day is observed

Boxing Day is a nationwide December 26 public holiday; special weekend rules preserve Monday or Monday-and-Tuesday closures after Christmas Day.

Traditions of Boxing Day

  • Second-round visiting

Friends and relatives who spent Christmas Day elsewhere use December 26 for another meal, household call or journey between communities.

  • Christmas leftovers

Ham, bread, cake and other festive dishes return in informal meals, reducing the burden of cooking after the main celebration.

  • Outdoor leisure

Beaches, yards and entertainment venues offer a social alternative to staying home, subject to weather, transport and each venue’s holiday hours.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Antigua and Barbuda holiday guidance. Antigua and Barbuda’s annual notices and the Public Holidays Act control substitute days and practical public-service arrangements.
