When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Monday, May 4, 2026. It is an Antigua and Barbuda public holiday. Public offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day in Antigua and Barbuda belongs to the international May Day tradition, but its meaning is inseparable from the country’s own worker-led political history. Plantation labour conditions remained harsh after emancipation, and the Antigua Trades and Labour Union emerged in 1939 as a durable organisation for wages, working conditions and representation. Sir Vere Cornwall Bird became its president in 1943 and helped carry labour demands into electoral politics.

The union movement did more than negotiate workplaces. It helped organise the Black majority as a political force, and universal adult suffrage in 1951 transformed representation. Remembering that connection prevents Labour Day from becoming a vague celebration of employment: the holiday recalls workers who organised collectively and the institutions through which economic claims developed into demands for political voice and national self-government.

The Public Holidays (Amendment) Act places Labour Day on the first Monday in May, producing a regular long weekend rather than a fixed May 1 observance. Antigua Cruise Port records union marches, rallies, fetes and beach parties among contemporary activities. Programmes vary, but speeches about wages, safety and dignity can share the day with family leisure and community gatherings.
