When is National Day?
In 2026, National Day falls on Monday, October 26, 2026. It is classified here as a Austrian public holiday.
History of National Day
Austrian National Day is held on October 26 and is a nationwide statutory holiday. Its modern meaning comes from the restoration of Austrian sovereignty after the Second World War. The 1955 State Treaty ended the Allied occupation after the last foreign troops withdrew, and on October 26, 1955, the National Council adopted the Federal Constitutional Law on Austria’s permanent neutrality. The date therefore commemorates a constitutional decision, not the signing date of the State Treaty itself.
Austria first marked a ‘Day of the Flag’ in 1956, and federal legislation established October 26 as National Day in 1965. Today federal institutions, museums and provincial venues often offer open days or public programmes. The Austrian Armed Forces conduct exhibitions, swearing-in ceremonies or presentations, while many residents join the nationwide ‘Fit am Nationalfeiertag’ tradition of hikes and recreation. Programmes vary annually and should not be presented as identical in every municipality.
Austria’s Working Rest Act expressly lists this date among the statutory holidays. Covered employees are normally entitled to an uninterrupted 24-hour holiday rest period, although authorised essential, transport, hospitality and other exempt work can continue. Austria has no general rule moving a fixed holiday to Monday when it falls on a weekend; the calendar date remains the legal holiday.
