When is State Sovereignty Day?

In 2026, State Sovereignty Day falls on Sunday, September 20, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of State Sovereignty Day

State Sovereignty Day is observed on September 20. It entered Azerbaijan's official commemorative calendar following the restoration of state control over the Karabakh region in 2023, and it appears in current official country information as a state anniversary.

The day is distinct from both May 28 Independence Day and October 18 Restoration of Independence Day. Those dates look to the 1918 and 1991 foundations of statehood; September 20 focuses on the contemporary assertion of sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is a civic observance rather than one of Article 105's general non-working holidays.

The President established this observance by order dated September 19, 2024, referring to events of September 19–20, 2023 and declaring September 20 State Sovereignty Day. It is absent from Article 105’s list of non-working holidays, so ordinary schedules continue. Because official wording concerns the outcome of armed conflict and territorial control, a neutral guide attributes the state’s description, recognises the conflict’s human consequences and avoids treating one government narrative as the only possible historical interpretation.

How State Sovereignty Day is observed

A national civic observance on September 20, not a statutory nationwide day off. Official ceremonies and educational programmes may be held.

Traditions of State Sovereignty Day

  • State ceremonies

Azerbaijani public institutions hold flag-raising events, official speeches and civic programmes centred on national sovereignty and territorial administration.

  • Historical discussion

Schools and cultural organisations examine Azerbaijan’s concepts of sovereignty, statehood and the events of September 2023 through attributed official sources.

  • Remembrance alongside ceremony

Communities may pair official programmes with remembrance for military and civilian lives lost during decades of conflict in the region.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Azerbaijani legal and official guidance. Lunar-date planning estimates and annual non-working-day schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
