When is Eid al-Fitr?

In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls on Saturday, March 21, 2026. It is classified here as a Bangladeshi public holiday.

History of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr marks the close of Ramadan and is one of Bangladesh’s largest annual public breaks. The first morning begins with Eid prayer, greetings and family visits. In a country where many people live and work away from their home districts, the days before Eid also produce a huge homecoming movement by road, rail and water, making the holiday as much about reunion as ceremony.

Government calendars set the length of the break annually; the 2026 schedule, for example, provided a multi-day holiday. Homes prepare sweets and festive meals, children receive gifts, and families make time for older relatives and neighbours. The first day shown here is a planning anchor, not a final public notice: moon sighting and government decisions determine the civil dates and period of closure.

For 2026, Bangladesh's moon-sighting decision placed Eid al-Fitr itself on Saturday, March 21. The original notification combined that general holiday with executive-order leave on March 19–20 and March 22–23; a later Ministry of Public Administration order added March 18, producing a seven-day government break from Shab-e-Qadr on March 17 through March 23. Bangladesh Bank's scheduled-bank closure remained March 19–23. Private establishments instead choose paid festival holidays under the Labour Act, so the full government break should not be assumed for every worker.

How Eid al-Fitr is observed
