When is Catholic Easter?

In 2026, Catholic Easter falls on Sunday, April 5, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Catholic Easter

Catholic Easter follows the Gregorian computus used by the Roman Catholic Church and may coincide with or precede Orthodox Pascha. Belarus’s Decree No. 157 explicitly recognises Easter according to both Catholic and Orthodox calendars, an important legal acknowledgement of the country’s religious diversity. Catholic communities are especially prominent in parts of western and northern Belarus, although parishes and families are found across the country.

Holy Week culminates in the Easter Vigil and Sunday Mass, followed by a family table with blessed eggs, breads and other festive foods. The recognition is religious rather than an extra employment holiday: Easter falls on the ordinary weekly rest day, and Belarus does not grant a statutory Easter Monday. When Catholic and Orthodox dates differ, each community follows its own liturgical calendar. Calendar listings should therefore show both feasts without suggesting two additional weekday closures.

The Gregorian computation can coincide with Orthodox Easter, as in some years, or produce a separate Sunday several weeks earlier. Publishing both entries accurately reflects the wording of Decree No. 157 and should not be interpreted as duplicate nationwide days off. Catholic Easter’s local culture is especially associated with historic Latin-rite communities in Hrodna and other western regions, though the legal recognition applies across Belarus.

How Catholic Easter is observed

An officially recognised religious holiday on Western Easter Sunday; it does not create a statutory Easter Monday or substitute day. The Sunday feast is not moved and does not produce a separate paid Monday holiday under the national calendar.

  • Blessing baskets

Families bring eggs, bread and other foods to church for a blessing before the household Easter meal. These practices reflect Belarus’s Latin-rite communities while sharing eggs, family meals and resurrection greetings with wider Easter culture.

  • Family table

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Belarusian legal and official guidance. Annual substitution, employer and local-service schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
