When is George Price Day?

In 2026, George Price Day falls on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Banks and public offices normally close on the holiday itself.

History of George Price Day

George Cadle Price was born on January 15, 1919. He emerged as the central political figure in Belize’s movement from British Honduras toward self-government and independence, serving as the country’s first Premier and then its first Prime Minister. His public life was inseparable from questions of national identity, constitutional change and Belize’s right to determine its own future.

Price led the government during the final years before independence in 1981, navigating international diplomacy and a long-running territorial claim by Guatemala. He received Belize’s Order of National Hero in 2000 and died in 2011. His legacy remains significant but not frozen: archives, schools and public exhibitions encourage Belizeans to examine his speeches and ideas rather than simply repeat a ceremonial portrait.

January 15 became a public and bank holiday in 2021. George Price Day is deliberately personal in name but national in purpose, connecting the birthday of a political leader to the wider story of decolonization, self-government and the building of a sovereign Belize.

How George Price Day is observed

George Price Day is a public and bank holiday. Ceremonies, exhibitions, school programs and visits to historic sites focus on Price’s role in the movement toward self-government and independence.

Traditions of George Price Day

  • Exhibitions and archives

NICH, the Belize Archives and partner institutions present letters, speeches, photographs and objects associated with Price. These programs give students and residents a way to encounter primary material from the independence era.

  • Civic ceremonies

Wreath-laying, speeches and flag observances recognize Price as a National Hero. Events often connect his personal legacy with the wider contributions of ordinary Belizeans who organized for self-government.

  • School discussions

Teachers use the holiday to explore Belize’s colonial history, the People’s United Party, internal self-government and the path to 1981. Good programs also invite students to discuss what nation-building means today.

  • Community service

The phrase “Good Belizeans,” often associated with Price’s public language, inspires volunteer and community-minded activities. Local arrangements differ, but the idea is to connect remembrance with practical responsibility.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Belize public and bank holiday notice. The Government of Belize publishes an annual holiday notice; substitute dates and employer schedules should be checked there.
