When is Brčko District Day?
In 2026, Brčko District Day falls on Sunday, March 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Entity or regional public holiday.
History of Brčko District Day
Brčko District Establishment Day marks creation of the self-governing district in 2000 after international arbitration resolved the strategically important Brčko area’s status. The District is a condominium of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two entities under state sovereignty, but it has its own institutions and legal system. Its establishment was central to implementing the Dayton settlement without assigning the territory exclusively to either entity.
Brčko District’s Holiday Law names Dan uspostave Brčko Distrikta as one of only three permanent District holidays and fixes it on March 8. New Year and Labour Day are the others. District institutions, enterprises, entrepreneurs and legal persons generally do not work, subject to the 2022 amendment allowing vital, continuous and community-serving activities under official instructions. The status applies only within Brčko.
Official observance focuses on the District’s institutions, multi-ethnic administration and local development. The Assembly and Government may hold an academy, present awards or arrange cultural and sporting programmes. March 8 is also International Women’s Day, so the observances overlap socially without sharing a legal basis. If District Day falls on Sunday, Brčko law transfers the closure to the first following working day.
