When is Orthodox Easter?

In 2026, Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday, April 12, 2026. It is classified here as a Bulgarian public holiday.

History of Orthodox Easter

Orthodox Easter Sunday in Bulgaria is the precise English identity of this Bulgarian holiday. Orthodox Pascha celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus. Bulgaria follows the Orthodox paschalion, so its Gregorian date can coincide with or differ from Easter used by Western churches. The date belongs to Bulgaria’s own civic, religious or cultural chronology, and understanding that subject is more useful than treating it as an interchangeable day away from work.

Article 154(1) of Bulgaria’s Labour Code expressly makes Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday public holidays on the dates determined for Orthodox Easter in the relevant year. Article 154(2) excludes this Easter quartet from the normal weekend-substitution mechanism. The four dates already form a continuous Friday-to-Monday break, so no additional Tuesday is generated because Saturday and Sunday are themselves within the statutory period.

After midnight or morning liturgy, Bulgarians exchange the greeting “Hristos voskrese” and response “Voistina voskrese,” tap coloured eggs and share lamb, kozunak and other foods after the fast. Sunday is itself one of the four named Labour Code holidays, not a weekend occurrence that produces another substitute day. Essential, continuous and scheduled services can still operate, while museums, shops and transport providers publish their own holiday hours. Readers should therefore separate the legal status of the date from the particular ceremonies, worship or household customs through which Bulgarians experience it.

How Orthodox Easter is observed

Orthodox Easter is part of Bulgaria’s nationwide four-day Orthodox Easter holiday; the separate weekend-substitution rule expressly does not apply.

Traditions of Orthodox Easter

  • Resurrection greeting

People greet one another with “Hristos voskrese” and answer “Voistina voskrese,” affirming the Resurrection in Bulgarian Orthodox usage.

  • Egg tapping

Each person taps a coloured egg against another; the surviving borak is traditionally associated with health and good fortune.

  • Festive table

Families joyfully end the fast with lamb, eggs, kozunak and regional dishes, often welcoming relatives across several generations.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Bulgarian government and parliamentary guidance. Education-sector observances and private-employer schedules can differ from the statutory public-holiday calendar.
