When is Assumption Day?
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Assumption Day
Assumption Day celebrates the Catholic belief that Mary was taken into heaven at the end of her earthly life. It is fixed on August 15 and remains one of Burkina Faso’s eleven non-working paid days under the 2026 reform. Legal recognition should be distinguished from personal religious participation.
Catholic parishes may hold Mass, prayer, Marian songs or pilgrimages according to local practice. Protestant, Muslim, traditional-religion and nonreligious residents may experience the date differently or only as a work holiday. The national calendar’s inclusion of several faith traditions does not mean that each observance is celebrated identically by everyone.
Law 01-2026/ALT defines these eleven dates as nationwide non-working paid days for employees and public agents. Official notices for movable religious holidays nevertheless require permanent-service units to maintain continuity, so health, security, utilities, transport and other essential operations may use rosters. The same reform removed the former automatic paid Monday after a legal holiday falling on Sunday. It also reclassified January 3, August 4, August 5, October 15, October 31 and November 1 as working days of commemoration or reflection; they are not public holidays in this calendar.
How Assumption Day is observed
Nationwide non-working paid day Saturday, August 15 in 2026; no Monday substitute holiday follows under the revised law.
Traditions of Assumption Day
Household and community
Catholic families may attend Mass, pray, visit relatives or take part in a locally organised pilgrimage. Practice differs among regions, languages, faith communities, generations and individual households.
Public and religious life
Parishes may use Marian hymns, flowers, processions or teaching where these forms are part of local Catholic practice. Programmes are organised by the responsible community or authority rather than prescribed uniformly nationwide.
Planning the day
Because the date falls Saturday in 2026, confirm normal Monday operations rather than expecting an in-lieu holiday. Permanent-service units may remain open even though the date is otherwise non-working and paid.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Burkina Faso official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Burkina Faso may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
