When is Ntaryamira Day?
In 2026, Ntaryamira Day falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Ntaryamira Day
April 6 commemorates President Cyprien Ntaryamira, who died in 1994 when the aircraft carrying him and Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana was shot down near Kigali. Ntaryamira had become Burundi’s president in February 1994 through the constitutional succession process after the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye and a period of acute political instability.
His death occurred while Burundi was already confronting killings, displacement and institutional crisis following the failed October 1993 coup. It also coincided with the event that immediately preceded the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Those histories are connected but distinct, and the commemoration is best described without turning a short Burundian presidency or the regional catastrophe into a simple heroic or causal story.
Burundian commemorations have included a requiem Mass at Regina Mundi Cathedral, wreath-laying and reflection at the Martyrs of Democracy mausoleum in Bujumbura, where Ntaryamira is buried. Decree No. 100/150 expressly lists the commemoration of his assassination among paid, non-working holidays. Ordinary residents are not required to attend the state or religious programme, and essential and continuous services may remain operational.
How Ntaryamira Day is observed
