When is National Day?

In 2026, National Day falls on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of National Day

Cameroon National Day, also called Unity Day, recalls the May 20, 1972 referendum that replaced the federal structure with the United Republic of Cameroon. It is not the anniversary of French Cameroun’s January 1960 independence or Southern Cameroons’ 1961 union. The distinction matters because the holiday specifically commemorates the unitary-state settlement and its official ideal of unity.

The main Yaoundé programme commonly includes military honours and a civil and military parade, with related ceremonies in regional capitals, councils and diplomatic missions. Official messaging emphasises peace and unity in diversity. Historical and contemporary views of the 1972 settlement are not unanimous, particularly amid Anglophone political grievances and conflict, and responsible text should not turn an official celebration into a claim of universal consent.

National Day is one of the civil legal holidays listed by Law 73/5. Closure is compulsory for workers except household staff, continuous services and other listed operations. Monthly, daily and hourly workers retain ordinary holiday pay; eligible employees required to work receive their pay for work plus an equal indemnity. A civil holiday falling on Sunday or another legal holiday carries its labour-and-pay treatment into the following day, but an additional bridge day requires a presidential order.

How National Day is observed

Traditions of National Day

  • Community observance

Families may watch broadcasts, display national colours or attend community celebrations while holding different views about the holiday’s political history. Practice differs among regions, language communities, congregations and households, so no single programme represents all of Cameroon.

  • Public programme

The state programme features military honours, civil participation, flags, speeches and parades, with regional events following their own schedules. Organisers publish the actual venue, timing and participation rules for each annual observance.

  • Planning the day

Road closures around parade routes can be significant, so residents should check municipal notices and essential-service arrangements. Travellers and employees should verify government, school, transport and workplace notices rather than assuming a complete nationwide shutdown.
