When is New Year’s Day?

In 2026, New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day begins the civil year on January 1 and is one of four civil holidays expressly named by Cameroon’s Law 73/5. It follows evening celebrations and a year-end season in which Christian worship, family travel and commercial activity may overlap. The legal holiday is secular and applies regardless of whether a person marks the date through faith, a public countdown or quiet rest at home.

Cameroon is constitutionally bilingual and culturally diverse, and New Year practices are not identical from Yaoundé and Douala to northern, western or rural communities. Families may exchange greetings in French, English or local languages, visit relatives and share food. Churches may hold crossover services, while hospitality, health, security and transport workers can remain on duty under separate schedules.

New Year’s Day is one of the civil legal holidays listed by Law 73/5. Closure is compulsory for workers except household staff, continuous services and other listed operations. Monthly, daily and hourly workers retain ordinary holiday pay; eligible employees required to work receive their pay for work plus an equal indemnity. A civil holiday falling on Sunday or another legal holiday carries its labour-and-pay treatment into the following day, but an additional bridge day requires a presidential order.

How New Year’s Day is observed

Civil legal holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026; Friday is not automatically a bridge day without a specific presidential order.

Traditions of New Year’s Day

  • Community observance

Families may exchange New Year greetings, visit relatives, attend worship or share a meal after the previous evening’s celebrations. Practice differs among regions, language communities, congregations and households, so no single programme represents all of Cameroon.

  • Public programme

Municipal, church and media programmes may welcome the year with music, prayer or messages suited to their communities. Organisers publish the actual venue, timing and participation rules for each annual observance.

  • Planning the day

Confirm January 2 opening hours because Thursday placement alone does not create a statutory four-day weekend. Travellers and employees should verify government, school, transport and workplace notices rather than assuming a complete nationwide shutdown.
