When is Mawlid?
In 2026, Mawlid falls on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Mawlid
Mawlid, named Maouloud el-Nebi in Chad’s holiday decree, commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. Muslim attitudes toward marking the anniversary are not identical: many communities hold devotional gatherings, while others do not treat a birthday celebration as part of their religious practice. The public holiday should therefore be described without implying one universal ritual.
Where it is observed devotionally, mosques, families or religious associations may organise Qur’an recitation, sermons, poetry, prayer and meals. Teaching often reflects on the Prophet’s life and ethical example. Local Islamic traditions, languages and scholarly guidance shape the form of the gathering, and the Gregorian date is confirmed through the lunar calendar.
Mawlid belongs to Chad’s nationwide public-holiday calendar. Decree 97-413 distinguishes its original non-paid holidays from four expressly paid holidays: workers on the original non-paid dates receive no statutory lost-time indemnity and the hours may be recovered, while different contracts, collective agreements and public-service rules can provide more favourable treatment. The decree does not automatically substitute Monday when one of these non-paid dates falls on Sunday; any additional closure requires its own official decision.
How Mawlid is observed
Nationwide public holiday shown for Tuesday, August 25, 2026; lunar confirmation can adjust the locally observed date. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Chad should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Mawlid
Household and community
Some Muslim communities may gather for recitation, teaching, prayer, devotional poetry or a shared meal. Customs differ among Arabic-, French- and local-language communities, regions, faiths and households across Chad.
Public or religious programme
Religious leaders determine whether and how their community marks Mawlid and announce the accepted lunar timing. The competent authority, congregation or organising group sets the actual programme rather than one nationwide script.
Practical planning
Verify Chad’s annual announcement instead of assuming the same Gregorian date in later years. Residents should verify employer, public-service, school, market and transport notices before relying on ordinary hours.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Chad official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Chad may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
