When is Republic Day?

In 2026, Republic Day falls on Saturday, November 28, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Republic Day

Republic Day commemorates November 28, 1958, when Chad was proclaimed an autonomous republic within the French Community. The date belongs to the decolonisation process but is not the same event as full independence on August 11, 1960. Keeping those milestones separate makes the calendar more historically precise.

Official observance may use flags, speeches, honours or civic education to recall the formation of modern state institutions. The anniversary also invites examination of how autonomy was negotiated and whose voices held power at the time. A public holiday can express a state narrative without requiring every citizen to interpret that history in exactly the same way.

Republic Day belongs to Chad’s nationwide public-holiday calendar. Decree 97-413 distinguishes its original non-paid holidays from four expressly paid holidays: workers on the original non-paid dates receive no statutory lost-time indemnity and the hours may be recovered, while different contracts, collective agreements and public-service rules can provide more favourable treatment. The decree does not automatically substitute Monday when one of these non-paid dates falls on Sunday; any additional closure requires its own official decision.

How Republic Day is observed

Nationwide public holiday on Saturday, November 28, 2026; no automatic Monday substitute applies under the original decree. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Chad should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of Republic Day

  • Household and community

Families and civic groups may follow broadcasts, display national colours or discuss the country’s path from autonomy to independence. Customs differ among Arabic-, French- and local-language communities, regions, faiths and households across Chad.

  • Public or religious programme

Authorities may hold flags, speeches, memorial activities or cultural programmes under a current official schedule. The competent authority, congregation or organising group sets the actual programme rather than one nationwide script.

  • Practical planning

Check weekend and Monday opening hours separately because the Saturday placement does not create a statutory substitute. Residents should verify employer, public-service, school, market and transport notices before relying on ordinary hours.
