When is Navy Day?
In 2026, Navy Day falls on Thursday, May 21, 2026. It is a Chilean national public holiday. Government offices, schools and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Navy Day
Navy Day, Día de las Glorias Navales, recalls the Battle of Iquique during the War of the Pacific. Arturo Prat, captain of the Esmeralda, became one of Chile’s best-known national figures after his death in the battle.
The anniversary has long been used to reflect on naval service, the coast and Chile’s relationship with the Pacific. Official ceremonies are especially prominent in Valparaíso, while schools and museums often explore the historical context.
May 21 is a national legal holiday. Remembering the battle need not require a single heroic reading; modern programmes increasingly place it within the wider human and regional history of the war.
On May 21, 1879, the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar sank Esmeralda at Iquique, while another engagement occurred off Punta Gruesa. Chile’s later commemoration centred on Prat’s decision to board the enemy vessel and the crew’s resistance. A responsible account also recognises Peruvian participants and the enormous human and territorial consequences of the wider War of the Pacific.
How Navy Day is observed
Navy Day is a nationwide public holiday marked by naval honours, Chilean flags and educational programmes about the Battle of Iquique and wider war.
Traditions of Navy Day
Ceremonies at maritime monuments
Valparaíso, Iquique and other ports hold naval honours and wreath-laying connected with Esmeralda, Arturo Prat and the 1879 battle.
The President’s annual address
May 21 historically hosted Chile’s presidential account to Congress, though the address moved to June 1 beginning in 2017.
Teaching the regional war
Museums and schools can place Chilean naval memory beside Peruvian perspectives and the broader consequences of the War of the Pacific.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Chile national holiday law and official calendar. Chile has specific legal transfer rules for selected religious and October holidays; the official annual calendar, employer schedules and local events should be checked.
