When is Reformation Day?
In 2026, Reformation Day falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026. It is a Chilean national public holiday. Government offices, schools and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Reformation Day
Reformation Day refers to the Protestant Reformation traditionally associated with October 31, 1517. In Chile, the holiday recognises the place of Evangelical and Protestant churches in a religious landscape once dominated by Catholic institutions.
Chile’s Evangelical communities are diverse, spanning Pentecostal, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist and many independent traditions. Services, music, testimony and community work may shape the day more than any single national ceremony.
Law No. 20,299 established the holiday in 2008 under the official name National Day of Evangelical and Protestant Churches. Its special transfer rule moves a Tuesday October 31 to the previous Friday and a Wednesday October 31 to the following Friday. On every other weekday it remains October 31; this differs from Chile’s general moved-Monday holidays.
The date recognises Chilean communities rather than only Martin Luther or European history. Pentecostal growth among working-class and rural congregations, Protestant education, social care, music and public preaching have all influenced national religious life. Denominations do not share one worship style or political position, and an accurate guide avoids presenting them as a single church.
How Reformation Day is observed
Reformation Day is a national public holiday recognising Chile’s diverse Evangelical and Protestant churches through worship and community programmes.
Traditions of Reformation Day
Denominational worship
Pentecostal, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist and independent congregations hold services shaped by their own theology, music and community practice.
Choirs and congregational music
Churches may organise choirs, brass ensembles or public praise gatherings, reflecting music’s strong place in many Chilean Evangelical communities.
Community service and testimony
Congregations highlight social care, preaching and personal testimony, connecting the public holiday with their work beyond formal Sunday worship.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Chile national holiday law and official calendar. Chile has specific legal transfer rules for selected religious and October holidays; the official annual calendar, employer schedules and local events should be checked.
