When is National Day?

In 2026, National Day falls on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Chinese public holiday.

History of National Day

National Day of the People’s Republic of China is observed on October 1, the anniversary used for the state founded in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. A founding ceremony took place in Beijing on that date, and the national holiday regulations subsequently established October 1–3 as statutory days for all citizens. The guide describes the official civic anniversary without treating state ceremony as a complete account of modern Chinese history or overlooking the complex imperial, republican, wartime and civil-war changes that preceded 1949.

Flags, floral displays, exhibitions and broadcast programmes make the anniversary visible, with larger official events concentrated in significant anniversary years. For many households the practical focus is travel or family time during the National Day ‘Golden Week’. Rail, air and road demand, hotel occupancy and timed admission at major attractions can be exceptionally high. Ceremonial areas may have security or traffic controls, and event details should be taken from local notices rather than assumed from earlier years.

The first three days are statutory; the wider 2026 mainland arrangement runs from Thursday, October 1 through Wednesday, October 7. Sunday, September 20 and Saturday, October 10 are adjusted working days. Public institutions follow the State Council schedule, while private and essential operations apply labour and roster rules. Hong Kong and Macao separately gazette October holidays, including their own SAR dates, and do not automatically adopt mainland China’s seven-day break or make-up weekends.
