When is Kataklysmos?
In 2026, Kataklysmos falls on Monday, June 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Cypriot public holiday.
History of Kataklysmos
Whit Monday follows Orthodox Pentecost and is a public holiday in Cyprus. On the island it is also widely known as Kataklysmos, meaning Flood, a name that blends the Christian feast with older water-centred customs and stories associated with Noah. The result is one of Cyprus’s most distinctive calendar dates: a religious holiday that becomes especially lively by the sea.
Larnaca’s waterfront festival is the best-known example, though local celebrations vary. Music, dance, food, craft stalls and playful water-splashing turn the long weekend into a public gathering for residents and visitors. The holiday’s popularity shows how a liturgical date can acquire a strong local civic personality without losing its Orthodox setting.
Kataklysmos (Orthodox Whit Monday) is listed here for the Republic of Cyprus, not for the separate administration in the northern part of the island, which publishes a different calendar. The Republic's public authorities and regulated institutions publish a stable set of general holidays, but private-sector entitlement is not created by one universal rule for every worker: collective agreements, contracts and sector orders can control paid leave and compensation. Official calendars retain holidays on their stated dates when they fall at a weekend; the Central Bank's 2026 notice, for example, simply records the Saturday dates for August 15 and December 26 rather than moving them to Monday.
How Kataklysmos is observed
A public holiday on the Monday after Orthodox Pentecost. Coastal festivals can affect traffic, accommodation and local opening hours. Cyprus does not generally substitute the following Monday merely because the calendar date falls on a weekend.
Traditions of Kataklysmos
Water splashing
Children and adults splash one another near the shore, a playful Cypriot custom that gives Kataklysmos its unmistakable public identity.
Folk poetry, music and dance
Festival stages feature Cypriot songs, dance groups, concerts and sometimes competitions in improvised rhyming couplets known as tsiattista.
Larnaca seafront festival
The island's largest programme fills the Finikoudes waterfront with stalls, performances and crowds over several days around Whit Monday.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Republic of Cyprus official holiday guidance. School, public-service and private-employer schedules may vary, including for religious observances.
