When is New Year’s Day?

In 2026, New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Cypriot public holiday.

History of New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day is a public holiday in Cyprus and falls within the long Christmas season observed by the island’s Greek Orthodox majority. It joins the civil beginning of the year with the Feast of Saint Basil, known in Greek as Agios Vasileios. That connection gives the day a warmer domestic character than a simple calendar reset: homes, parishes and extended families carry its customs forward together.

The best-known tradition is vasilopita, a New Year cake or bread containing a hidden coin. The person who finds it is traditionally thought to receive good fortune for the year ahead. Families cut portions in an order that can include the household, absent relatives and symbolic shares for Christ or the home. It is a small ritual, but it makes the holiday feel rooted in generosity, luck and continuity.

New Year’s Day in Cyprus is listed here for the Republic of Cyprus, not for the separate administration in the northern part of the island, which publishes a different calendar. The Republic's public authorities and regulated institutions publish a stable set of general holidays, but private-sector entitlement is not created by one universal rule for every worker: collective agreements, contracts and sector orders can control paid leave and compensation. Official calendars retain holidays on their stated dates when they fall at a weekend; the Central Bank's 2026 notice, for example, simply records the Saturday dates for August 15 and December 26 rather than moving them to Monday.

How New Year’s Day is observed

Traditions of New Year’s Day

  • Vasilopita and the flouri

Families cut Saint Basil's cake in an agreed order, and the person who finds its hidden coin, or flouri, receives the year's good-luck wishes.

  • Saint Basil liturgy

Orthodox parishes celebrate Saint Basil's feast and the Circumcision of Christ, joining the civil New Year to the Church's Christmas season.

  • Kalanda and family visits

Children's seasonal carols, gift-giving and visits between extended families carry Christmas customs through the first day of the new year.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Republic of Cyprus official holiday guidance. School, public-service and private-employer schedules may vary, including for religious observances.
