When is May Uprising Day?

In 2026, May Uprising Day falls on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of May Uprising Day

May 5 commemorates the May Uprising of the Czech people in 1945, a nationwide wave of resistance during the final days of Nazi occupation. In Prague, Czech-language broadcasting and fighting around the radio building became a catalyst for open revolt. Residents erected thousands of barricades, resistance groups and members of the police took up arms, and the Czech National Council sought to coordinate the city as German forces attempted to move through or suppress it.

The struggle continued until the German capitulation in Prague on May 8, shortly before Soviet troops entered the city on May 9. Other Czech towns had risen before and during the Prague battle, so the statutory name is broader than ‘Prague Uprising Day’. Its memory includes armed resisters, radio workers, medical volunteers and civilians who supplied barricades or died in reprisals. It also requires careful history because post-war communist narratives selectively elevated or obscured different participants.

Act No. 245/2000 classifies May 5 as a significant day, not as a state holiday or other public holiday. It is therefore a normal working and school day with no weekend substitution. Memorial ceremonies and museum programmes can occur, especially at Czech Radio, military museums and local monuments. May 5 marks the beginning of the uprising; May 8 is the separate public holiday marking victory and the end of the European war.

How May Uprising Day is observed

A legally recognised significant day on May 5, not a day off; its focus is the 1945 Czech uprising rather than the May 8 victory holiday.
