When is Carnival Tuesday?
In 2026, Carnival Tuesday falls on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. It is a Dominican public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Carnival Tuesday
Carnival Tuesday is the second and final public road day of Mas Domnik. It falls immediately before Ash Wednesday, the Christian opening of Lent, which is why its date changes with Easter and usually lands in February or March. Although Monday and Tuesday share music, masquerade and street participation, the Division of Culture specifically identifies Tuesday with a parade of costume bands. Designers, band leaders and masqueraders bring months of preparation into a final display before the Carnival season closes.
Dominica’s Carnival grew from masquerade shaped by African-derived uses of masks, drums, colour and embodied performance, later joined by pageants, calypso competitions, steel pan and organised bands. Tuesday’s costumes and jump-up belong to that layered history. They can carry beauty, satire, rivalry and social commentary rather than serving as decoration alone. Calypso remains an important narrative form, while bouyon—developed by Dominican musicians—gives the contemporary road celebration a strongly local pulse.
The day is legally and practically different from an unrestricted street party. Annual Carnival Orders set hours and rules for masks, sound, glass containers, routes and public safety, and those details can change. The 2023 Order named both Monday and Tuesday as Carnival days but assigned them different starting hours. Carnival Tuesday is a national public holiday; nevertheless, attendance is optional, and essential workers, accommodation staff and transport operators may follow special schedules while others perform, spectate or rest.
How Carnival Tuesday is observed
Carnival Tuesday is a nationwide public holiday. Costume bands, calypso, bouyon and final jump-up fill approved routes before Lent, under annually published operating and safety rules.
Traditions of Carnival Tuesday
Costume-band parade
Bands present coordinated costumes and choreography on Tuesday, turning streets into a judged and participatory display of Dominican design and performance.
Final jump-up
Revellers and spectators share the last open street celebration before Ash Wednesday closes the pre-Lenten Carnival period for the year.
Calypso social commentary
Songs developed through the Carnival season bring humour, rivalry and commentary on Dominican public life into the festival’s concluding day.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Dominica public-holiday guidance. Dominica publishes the official annual public-holiday calendar and Carnival orders; essential-service and employer arrangements may vary.
