When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a Fijian public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday follows Easter Sunday and completes Fiji’s four-day statutory Easter period. For Christians it extends the celebration of the resurrection; in the national calendar it also gives households time to return from church conferences, village visits and family gatherings. The day is shared nationally without requiring every Fijian to attach the same religious meaning to it.

The Employment Relations Act lists Easter Monday as a public holiday, and the annual Government calendar supplies its civil date. Since Easter Sunday is April 5 in 2026, Easter Monday is April 6. Unlike a fixed-date holiday, it is already defined by a Monday and does not need a weekend-transfer calculation.

Government offices and many ordinary workplaces close, while airports, ferries, hotels, hospitals and other necessary or visitor-facing services may continue under holiday rosters. Workers should distinguish the national calendar from their personal entitlement: normal hours, public-holiday pay and any overtime are determined by applicable employment law, wage rules and agreements rather than by a general assumption that all work stops.

How Easter Monday is observed

Monday, April 6 is the official 2026 public holiday. It closes the statutory Easter weekend, although essential and visitor-facing services can continue under scheduled arrangements.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • Church fellowship

Some congregations continue Easter music, youth activities or shared meals on Monday after the principal Sunday celebration has ended.

  • Picnics and outdoor time

Families may gather at beaches, parks or village spaces for an informal meal and recreation during the final holiday.

  • Return journeys

Travellers allow extra time for roads, ferries and airports as people return from church conferences, villages and family visits.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Fiji Government and employment-law guidance. Annual Government Gazette or Cabinet notices should be checked for final dates and any declared special holidays.
