When is Whit Sunday?

In 2026, Whit Sunday falls on Sunday, May 24, 2026. It is classified here as a Finnish public holiday.

History of Whit Sunday

Whit Sunday, Helluntai, is Finland’s name for Pentecost, the Christian feast of the Holy Spirit and the formation of the Church. It falls 49 days after Western Easter Sunday, or on the fiftieth day when Easter itself is counted. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland treats Pentecost as one of the church year’s three principal festival cycles alongside Christmas and Easter.

Finland once retained a second Pentecost day on Monday, as many European calendars did. Whit Monday ceased to be a Finnish public holiday in 1973, leaving Sunday as the statutory feast. The change is easy to miss in international calendars and matters for travellers: modern Finland does not provide a separate Monday closure after Pentecost, nor a substitute weekday because the remaining holiday is always Sunday.

Churches celebrate with readings, music and confirmation-season events. For many other households the day passes as a quiet early-summer Sunday, often spent at a cottage, in the garden or near water. Work in services that normally operate on Sundays continues, with compensation determined through employment legislation and collective agreements rather than by a blanket promise of leave for every worker.

How Whit Sunday is observed

A nationwide church and public holiday on the seventh Sunday after Western Easter; Finland has no separate Whit Monday public holiday.

Traditions of Whit Sunday

  • Pentecost services

Lutheran churches celebrate the Holy Spirit and the Church’s mission through readings, music and the red liturgical colour.

  • Confirmation season

Some parishes connect the early-summer period with youth and confirmation activities, although exact schedules differ across Finland’s congregations.

  • A light summer Sunday

Cottage visits, gardening and meals outdoors reflect Pentecost’s place near the beginning of Finland’s brief northern summer season.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Finnish legal and calendar guidance. Flag days and cultural observances do not automatically mean a general day off.
