When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday extends the statutory Easter period after the principal Sunday feast. Its inclusion alongside Easter Sunday reflects Gabon's inherited francophone Christian civil calendar, but Monday has no single mandatory liturgy equivalent to the Resurrection celebration itself.

For many households the day is practical as well as religious: it allows rest, visits and return travel after long Holy Week and Sunday programmes. Christians of different denominations and residents of other faiths can therefore experience the same closure differently.

Easter Monday is within Gabon's legal public-holiday regime governed by Decree No. 727/1998, as amended by Decree No. 484/2004 and applied in Labour Ministry notices. Ordinary legal holidays are non-working and paid; compensation is based on the normal schedule excluding overtime, and a covered worker required to work receives that compensation plus pay for the work performed. Recovery requires a specific ministerial derogation. Articles 220–221 of the 2021 Labour Code preserve Sunday as the normal weekly rest day but create no automatic Monday substitute.

How Easter Monday is observed

Paid, non-working holiday on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is an independent listed holiday following Easter Sunday, not an observed substitute created because Easter falls on Sunday.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • Community observance

Families may continue Easter meals, visit relatives or rest after the principal Sunday worship and overnight vigil. Practice varies among provinces, congregations, families and individuals, so no single programme represents all of Gabon.

  • Public or religious programme

Some parishes hold fellowship, youth activities or quieter Monday services, while others complete their programme on Sunday. Organised events document one institution or locality and should not be mistaken for compulsory participation.

  • Planning the date

Return traffic can be heavier late Monday; schools, government offices and most formal workplaces resume under their published calendars. Essential services and some private businesses may operate, and current official or workplace notices remain decisive.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Gabon official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Gabon may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
