When is Africa Day?
In 2026, Africa Day falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Africa Day
Africa Day in The Gambia, also called African Liberation Day in official notices, recalls the creation of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa on May 25, 1963. Thirty-two independent African states adopted the OAU Charter amid campaigns against colonialism and apartheid. The OAU was succeeded by the African Union in 2002, broadening the institutional focus to integration, peace and development.
The Gambia was not yet independent at the founding summit; it joined the OAU in March 1965, shortly after February independence. That chronology gives the date a particular local resonance connecting national decolonisation with continental organisation. Celebration need not imply that pan-African aspirations have been fulfilled: migration, trade, conflict, governance and regional cooperation remain subjects for debate.
Africa Day does not appear in the fixed-day list attributed to the old Public Holidays Act, so the operative date rests on current executive declaration. Contemporary reporting of the Presidency’s 2026 notice records Monday, May 25 as a national public holiday. The Labour Act 2023 recognises remuneration for public holidays and preserves a public holiday that falls during annual leave, but it does not by itself turn every named commemoration into a holiday. The 2021 presidential advisory says a Monday will be declared when a public holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday; because that wording anticipates a declaration, users should still check the dated State House notice rather than assume an automatic statutory substitute.
How Africa Day is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Monday, May 25, 2026, under the reported presidential declaration for African Liberation Day. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Gambia should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Africa Day
Community practice
Schools, families and civic groups may discuss African history, use continental or national colours, share music or follow media programmes without a prescribed national ritual.
Public or religious programme
Government, diplomatic, educational and cultural institutions may hold speeches, panels or performances shaped by the annual continental theme.
Planning the holiday
Confirm the venue and access for any programme; the public holiday does not mean every museum, market, transport route or essential service closes.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official The Gambia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in The Gambia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
