When is African Union Day?

In 2026, African Union Day falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of African Union Day

May 25 marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa in 1963. Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, argued for rapid continental political unity, while other leaders preferred more gradual intergovernmental cooperation; the OAU charter reflected that negotiation. The African Union succeeded the OAU in 2002 with broader institutions and development, peace and integration mandates.

Ghana’s connection is contemporary as well as historical: Accra hosts the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat. The annual day can celebrate anti-colonial achievement while also examining conflict, borders, mobility, economic integration and the gap between Pan-African commitments and implementation. Act 1142 retains May 25 as a commemorative day, not a day off.

African Union Day is the sole commemorative day in the Second Schedule to Act 601 as replaced by the 2025 Amendment Act 1142. The Act expressly distinguishes commemorative days from public holidays, so offices, schools and businesses follow normal schedules unless an employer or institution separately decides otherwise. It does not generate a substitute day when it falls on a weekend.

How African Union Day is observed

Commemorative day on Monday, May 25, 2026; it was not a public holiday. The official programme included a flag-raising ceremony at State House in Accra.

Traditions of African Union Day

  • Household and community practice

Ghanaians may attend lectures or cultural programmes, discuss Pan-Africanism or follow AU and AfCFTA events. There is no prescribed household celebration.

  • Public or religious programme

The Foreign Ministry, diplomatic missions, schools and Pan-African organisations may hold flag-raisings, speeches, exhibitions and policy dialogue; the 2026 national ceremony stressed integration and self-determination.

  • Planning the date

Offices, schools and businesses remain open on May 25. Event attendance or local traffic changes do not convert the commemorative day into paid leave.
