When is Holy Spirit Monday?

In 2026, Holy Spirit Monday falls on Monday, June 1, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Holy Spirit Monday

Holy Spirit Monday, Agiou Pneumatos, follows Pentecost and falls fifty days after Orthodox Easter Sunday. Orthodox worship dedicates the Monday specifically to the Holy Spirit after Sunday’s celebration of the Trinity and the descent described in Acts. The date is widely visible in Greece: the Bank of Greece lists it as a holiday, public services and many professional groups close, and communities whose churches are dedicated to the Holy Spirit hold patronal feasts. Its movable date must be calculated from Orthodox Pascha rather than western Pentecost.

Legally, however, Holy Spirit Monday is not among the nine compulsory holidays in Article 60 for every private undertaking. Collective agreements, professional rules, customary practice and local patronal arrangements determine who receives leave, so a national guide must avoid promising universal closure. Where observed, parish liturgies may be followed by panigyria with food, music and dancing. Residents often use the long weekend for early-summer travel, while visitors should check the particular employer, bank, museum or transport schedule relevant to their plans.

Traditions of Holy Spirit Monday

  • Holy Spirit liturgy

Orthodox parishes celebrate services honouring the Holy Spirit, especially in churches and communities for which the day is patronal.

  • Local panigyria

Patronal communities may continue worship with shared food, traditional music and dancing, following arrangements announced locally each year.

  • Early-summer travel

Workers whose sector observes the Monday use the three-day weekend for island, village or coastal trips before peak summer.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Greek Ministry of Labour and government guidance. Collective agreements, regional arrangements and school schedules may differ from the general statutory rule.
