When is Corpus Christi?
In 2026, Corpus Christi falls on Thursday, June 4, 2026. It is a Grenadian public holiday. Bank and public-office closures apply under the annual Cabinet Office calendar, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is the Roman Catholic solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, centred on belief in Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. The feast developed in medieval Europe and was extended to the universal Latin Church in the thirteenth century. Grenada’s holiday falls on the traditional Thursday after Trinity Sunday, sixty days after Easter Sunday.
Its place on the civil calendar reflects the long history and continuing presence of Catholic communities in Grenada. Parishes may celebrate Mass, Eucharistic adoration or a procession in which the consecrated host is carried publicly. Practice depends on parish arrangements, weather and diocesan direction; a procession should therefore be described as possible rather than assumed everywhere. Other Christians and non-Christians may simply experience the date as a public break.
The Cabinet Office confirms the movable Thursday each year, while the Bank Holidays Act establishes its public status. Government offices, banks and many businesses close even though the specifically Eucharistic rites are Catholic. Hotels and essential services may keep special hours. Because Corpus Christi always falls on Thursday in Grenada’s calendar, the normal Sunday-substitution rule is irrelevant.
How Corpus Christi is observed
Corpus Christi is a statutory public holiday, with Catholic Mass and possible Eucharistic processions alongside broad closures and family time.
Traditions of Corpus Christi
Solemn Mass
Catholic parishes celebrate the Eucharist with readings, hymns and preaching focused specifically on Christ’s Body and Blood together.
Eucharistic procession
Where parish and weather arrangements permit, worshippers may accompany the Blessed Sacrament outdoors in a reverent public procession.
Parish preparation
Altar servers, choirs and lay groups prepare music, flowers and ceremonial details, making the feast a collaborative Catholic observance.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Grenada Cabinet Office public-holiday calendar. Grenada’s Cabinet Office publishes the annual calendar; Sunday bank holidays are generally observed on the following Monday and special holiday notices control any exception.
