When is Mother’s Day?

In 2026, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 10, 2026. It is a Grenadian cultural or religious observance rather than a statutory public holiday, so workplace and school schedules usually continue.

History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in Grenada follows the second-Sunday-in-May date shared with the United States and many Caribbean societies. The modern international form grew during the early twentieth century through Anna Jarvis’s campaign in the United States, then spread through churches, newspapers, commerce and family networks. Grenadians adapted the occasion to local patterns of Sunday worship and close extended-family visiting rather than treating it as a statutory civic holiday.

The observance recognizes biological mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers and other women who have carried maternal responsibilities. That broader language matters in Grenadian and diaspora families where care may be shared across households or borders. Churches often acknowledge mothers through prayer, songs, flowers or short tributes; families follow with lunch, telephone or video calls, and practical acts intended to reduce the honouree’s workload.

Mother’s Day is not included in the Bank Holidays Act, and because it always falls on Sunday it does not generate a substitute weekday closure. Restaurants and florists may be busy, while shops follow their normal Sunday rules. The day can also be emotionally difficult for people facing bereavement, infertility or strained relationships, so community observance is most thoughtful when appreciation is warm but not compulsory or narrowly defined.

How Mother’s Day is observed

Mother’s Day is a Sunday cultural observance, not a statutory holiday; churches, restaurants and families may be busy without a Monday closure.

Traditions of Mother’s Day

  • Recognition during worship

Congregations may invite mothers to stand, offer a prayer or present flowers while acknowledging varied forms of maternal care.

  • A meal prepared by others

Children and relatives cook at home or reserve restaurant tables so the person being honoured is relieved of usual Sunday work.

  • Calls across the diaspora

Phone and video greetings connect mothers in Grenada with children and grandchildren living elsewhere in the Caribbean, North America or Britain.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Grenadian cultural and heritage guidance. Grenada’s Cabinet Office publishes the annual calendar; Sunday bank holidays are generally observed on the following Monday and special holiday notices control any exception.
