When is CHamoru Heritage Day?
In 2026, CHamoru Heritage Day falls on Monday, March 2, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of CHamoru Heritage Day
Guam History and CHamoru Heritage Day honours the island’s long history with Indigenous CHamoru people at its centre. CHamoru voyagers settled the Mariana Islands thousands of years before Europeans arrived and developed complex systems of kinship, navigation, agriculture, fishing and architecture, including the latte-stone tradition. Language, family obligations and relationships with land and sea remain living culture rather than museum remnants, even after centuries of political and social change.
The day also invites honest study of colonisation. Sustained Spanish mission and military rule began in 1668 and involved warfare, forced resettlement, disease and conversion as well as cultural exchange. Guam passed to U.S. control in 1898, was governed by the U.S. Navy, endured Japanese occupation and wartime violence from 1941 to 1944, and became an organised unincorporated territory under the 1950 Organic Act. CHamoru resilience and adaptation run through every period.
The holiday was formerly associated with European ‘discovery’ narratives and Magellan’s 1521 arrival. Its current name redirects attention from a visitor’s arrival to Guam’s own people, histories and perspectives. Guam Code §1000 places it on the first Monday in March. Schools and cultural institutions may build programmes across Mes CHamoru, but the statutory closure applies to GovGuam; private organisations decide their own opening arrangements unless another rule governs.
How CHamoru Heritage Day is observed
Monday, March 2 is a Government of Guam holiday in 2026 and anchors wider March programmes about CHamoru language, history and culture.
