When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday, the centre of the Christian commemoration of Jesus’s resurrection. Guinea’s decree names the Monday rather than Good Friday, Easter Sunday or the whole Easter period. Its date is calculated from Western Christianity’s movable Easter rule, which places Easter Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon associated with the March equinox; Easter Monday consequently ranges across March and April.

Christian institutions in Guinea grew through Catholic and Protestant missions during and after the colonial period, but the holiday now has nationwide labour status in a country where Muslims form the majority. Easter worship is therefore denominational, not a practice attributable to every resident. The civic day off can be shared across faiths while churches continue the services, music and family gatherings begun during Holy Week.

Decree D/2022/0526 lists Easter Monday among Guinea’s legal, non-working and paid holidays across the public, private and mixed sectors. Work is suspended except in services that cannot stop. Labour Code Articles 222.6–222.7 preserve ordinary pay, prohibit recovery of the lost hours and require additional pay for covered employees who work: the hourly rate plus 60% by day or plus 100% by night. Article 2 of the 2022 decree grants a next-working-day substitute only to Independence Day, New Year’s Day and Eid al-Fitr. It does not extend that rule to Easter Monday. A Saturday or Sunday placement therefore remains on its calendar date unless a separate, valid official measure says otherwise.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • At home and in the community

Christian families may continue Easter visits, share a meal or rest after Holy Week and Sunday worship, according to denomination and household circumstances. Customs differ among Guinea’s regions, languages, faith communities and households, so this is a documented pattern rather than a rule for everyone.

  • Organised observance

Catholic, Protestant and independent congregations may schedule Mass, prayer, choir music or youth activities, with programmes differing from one church to another. The responsible authority or organiser sets the actual theme, venue, timing and access arrangements each year.

  • Practical planning

Because the holiday is already a Monday, schools and offices normally resume under their own published schedules on Tuesday. Essential services can operate, and travellers should confirm current transport, market, worship and workplace notices.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Guinea official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Guinea may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
