When is Flag Day?
In 2026, Flag Day falls on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. It is a civic, cultural or educational observance rather than a statutory paid holiday, so workplace and school schedules vary.
History of Flag Day
Honduras observes Flag Day on September 1, opening a month of patriotic ceremonies that culminate in Independence Day. The date was established by Decree 84-95 and gives schools and public institutions a moment to explain the flag’s blue-and-white design and five stars.
The flag draws on the banner of the Federal Republic of Central America. Its five stars are widely understood as an aspiration toward Central American unity, a connection reinforced by the legacy of Francisco Morazán. The symbol therefore joins Honduran nationhood to a wider regional history.
Flag Day is civic rather than a general paid holiday. School flag raisings, civic pledges and cultural programs are common, while employers and most public services normally keep their standard schedule.
The national flag itself was created by Legislative Decree 7 in 1866, long before September 1 became its dedicated day. Decree 84-95 later instructed civil and military authorities, state institutions and citizens to pay tribute to the flag each September 1. Official ceremonies commonly include the anthem, a formal raising of the pavilion and a reading of the decree, establishing the pattern that schools adapt for younger students.
How Flag Day is observed
Schools and institutions raise and explain the flag on September 1. It is not a general statutory day off.
Traditions of Flag Day
Flag raisings
Schools and public bodies begin the patriotic month by raising the national flag, singing the anthem and reflecting on civic responsibilities.
Student presentations
Children research the flag’s colors, stars and history, then present poems, speeches or visual work to classmates and families.
Blue-and-white displays
Buildings, classrooms and businesses may display Honduran colors. The visible preparation continues throughout September and connects Flag Day with the wider independence season.
Regional-history lessons
Teachers connect the five stars to the former Central American federation and to the continued idea of regional cooperation.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Honduran cultural or educational guidance. Public-sector instructions and private-sector schedules can differ, particularly during Semana Santa and Semana Morazánica.
