When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a Hong Kong public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday in Hong Kong is the Monday after Western Easter Sunday and completes the general-holiday weekend beginning on Good Friday. It is a civil day off rather than the principal Christian celebration, which is Easter Sunday, yet it gives congregations and families time after Holy Week services. Hong Kong residents may use it for worship-related gatherings, leisure, travel or rest without one common form of observance.

A phased amendment made Easter Monday the fifteenth Employment Ordinance statutory holiday from January 1, 2026. Good Friday and its following day remained general but non-statutory in that year. Easter Monday fell on April 6, the same date used for the Sunday Ching Ming substitution; the calendar therefore carries two legitimate legal identities on April 6 and an exceptional additional general holiday on April 7.

All employees covered by Hong Kong's Employment Ordinance receive statutory holidays regardless of service length; holiday pay requires a continuous contract of at least three months. General holidays and statutory holidays are overlapping but legally distinct lists. Government offices and many banks commonly close on general holidays, while transport, health care, hospitality, retail and other essential or commercial services may remain open. Required statutory-holiday work triggers the alternative or substituted holiday arrangements set out by the Labour Department.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • Congregational worship

Catholic, Anglican, Protestant and other Christian communities hold services in Cantonese, English and other languages according to their liturgical traditions.

  • Prayer and charitable service

Congregations combine worship with reflection, food collections or community support, although participation and programme timing differ substantially between churches.

  • Easter Monday worship

Services for Easter Monday in Hong Kong reflect this feast’s particular place in the Christian calendar. Scripture, music, processions or devotional emphasis therefore differ from the practices used for other Christian holidays.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Hong Kong Government and Labour Department guidance. General holidays and statutory employee holidays are different legal lists; check the relevant annual Government guidance.
