When is National Day?
In 2026, National Day falls on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Hong Kong public holiday.
History of National Day
National Day in Hong Kong marks the proclamation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. It entered Hong Kong's post-1997 calendar as a fixed civic holiday. The anniversary differs from HKSAR Establishment Day: October 1 concerns the PRC's founding, whereas July 1 marks the Special Administrative Region's establishment and commencement of the Basic Law. Keeping those identities separate prevents a common chronology error.
In 2026 National Day fell on Thursday, October 1 and appeared on both general and statutory lists. Official flag displays, ceremonies and cultural programmes may accompany it, but scale varies annually. A neutral guide can state constitutional and historical facts without assuming every resident expresses the same views. Hong Kong does not automatically adopt mainland China's National Day Golden Week or adjusted working-weekend system.
All employees covered by Hong Kong's Employment Ordinance receive statutory holidays regardless of service length; holiday pay requires a continuous contract of at least three months. General holidays and statutory holidays are overlapping but legally distinct lists. Government offices and many banks commonly close on general holidays, while transport, health care, hospitality, retail and other essential or commercial services may remain open. Required statutory-holiday work triggers the alternative or substituted holiday arrangements set out by the Labour Department.
How National Day is observed
