When is Sports Day?

In 2026, Sports Day falls on Monday, October 12, 2026. It is classified here as a Japanese national holiday.

History of Sports Day

Sports Day, Supōtsu no Hi, encourages people to enjoy sports and foster a healthy body and mind. It grew from Health and Sports Day, created to mark the legacy of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, whose opening ceremony took place on October 10.

The holiday now falls on the second Monday of October, making room for a three-day weekend and community activity. School sports festivals, local races, walking events and informal outdoor play fit its broad purpose. The rename to Sports Day in 2020 emphasised participation and enjoyment rather than only formal athletic competition.

Sports Day is governed by Japan’s Act on National Holidays, and the Cabinet Office’s official calendar confirms its 2026 date. A statutory national holiday falling on Sunday creates a holiday on the nearest following day that is not already a national holiday; a weekday between two national holidays is also a holiday. These rules, not an informal “Mondayisation” assumption, produce May 6 and September 22 in 2026. Bank of Japan offices additionally close from December 31 through January 3, but those banking closures do not turn December 31 or January 2–3 into national holidays for all workers and businesses.

How Sports Day is observed
