When is Flag Day?

In 2026, Flag Day falls on Thursday, April 16, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Flag Day

Jordanian Flag Day is observed on April 16 as a civic anniversary dedicated to the national flag. The present design was adopted in 1922 and draws on the flag of the Great Arab Revolt. Its black, white and green horizontal bands are joined by a red triangle bearing a seven-pointed white star. Official explanations connect the colours with historical Arab dynasties and the red triangle with the Hashemite tradition, while the star is commonly associated with the seven verses of the opening chapter of the Qur’an and ideals of unity.

The observance became a regular focus for state and public programmes in the twenty-first century. Prime Ministry material presents the flag as a symbol of sovereignty, cohesion and the sacrifices made in building the state. Flag Day is nevertheless not included among the general non-working public holidays. Schools, ministries, municipalities, universities and military institutions can hold ceremonies while ordinary government and commercial schedules continue.

The date gives educators an opportunity to discuss correct flag protocol, the emblem’s relationship to the 1916 revolt and the distinction between a national symbol and a day of statutory leave. Displays may be prominent on streets and public buildings, but participation varies locally. Any closure would require a separate government decision; the annual commemoration itself remains a working civic observance.
