When is Mazingira Day?
In 2026, Mazingira Day falls on Saturday, October 10, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Mazingira Day
Mazingira Day in Kenya is the current legal name for October 10. The date was once Moi Day, was omitted from official practice after the 2010 Constitution, restored following a 2017 High Court ruling, and later appeared as Huduma Day and then Utamaduni Day. The Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 2024 renamed Utamaduni Day as Mazingira Day.
The 2024 amendment gave the holiday an environmental purpose, including tree planting and growing, within the national restoration campaign. Planting is only one stage: appropriate species, seedling survival, water, protection of existing ecosystems and community land needs determine whether activity produces lasting conservation. A balanced guide should not equate ceremonial planting alone with ecological success.
Mazingira Day is fixed in Part I on October 10. It falls on Saturday in 2026, and the Act’s Sunday-only substitution rule does not create a holiday on Monday, October 12. Section 4 of the Public Holidays Act substitutes only a Part I holiday that falls on Sunday, using the first succeeding non-holiday; it creates no automatic Monday holiday for a Saturday date and does not extend to the faith-specific days in Parts II and III. Section 5 allows government departments to open and employees to work where another law or agreement provides the applicable pay or time off, so a public holiday is not proof that every service closes.
How Mazingira Day is observed
Nationwide Part I public holiday on Saturday, October 10, 2026; no automatic Monday substitute follows under section 4.
Traditions of Mazingira Day
Planting and growing
Schools, faith groups, agencies and residents may plant trees, but organisers should plan species choice, aftercare and survival rather than count seedlings alone.
Restoration work
Activities can include wetland or forest restoration, clean-ups and environmental education suited to county ecosystems and community priorities.
Saturday placement
Participants should use official project instructions and safety guidance; offices do not gain a Monday closure solely because the 2026 holiday falls Saturday.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kenya official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Kenya may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
