When is National Day?
In 2026, National Day falls on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Kuwaiti public holiday.
History of National Day
Kuwait's National Day is celebrated on February 25, although independence from the British protection treaty was declared on June 19, 1961. The date was moved by decree in 1964 to coincide with the 1950 accession of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, widely remembered for his role in independence and in laying the foundations of the modern state.
That choice gives the holiday a layered civic story. It looks to sovereignty, constitutional development and the institutions built during the early years of independence, rather than treating national identity as a single event. Kuwait Government Online describes this period through the nationality, monetary, passport and government-organisation laws that helped define the young state.
February 25 is the first half of Kuwait's distinctive two-day national season, followed immediately by Liberation Day. National colours, flags, family outings, heritage displays and concerts make the celebrations highly visible, while many families simply use the extended break to be together.
The private-sector entitlement is one paid day under Article 68; the public sector follows the Cabinet or CSC decision for that year. In 2026 the Cabinet closed ministries, government bodies and public institutions on Wednesday and Thursday, February 25β26, with work resuming Sunday after the normal weekend. The Central Bank issued its own matching closure. These sector-specific notices should not be read as authority for an extra substitute day whenever either anniversary falls on Friday or Saturday.
How National Day is observed
A one-day fully paid National Day holiday on February 25 under Article 68 of Kuwait's Labour Law. Cabinet decisions commonly coordinate arrangements with Liberation Day on February 26.
