When is Latgale Congress Day?

In 2026, Latgale Congress Day falls on Monday, April 27, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Latgale Congress Day

Latgale Congress Day recalls a meeting in Rēzekne in 1917 at which representatives of Latgale, Latvia’s eastern historical region, decided to seek union with the other Latvian lands. The decision was made in a turbulent year of revolution and war, when borders and political futures were uncertain throughout the former Russian Empire.

The congress is remembered as an important step toward the united Latvian state proclaimed in 1918. It also underlines that Latvia’s national story contains regional languages, traditions and experiences. The day is a commemoration, not a day off, but is especially meaningful in Latgale through cultural programmes, conferences and regional history projects.

Delegates met in Rēzekne on 26–27 April 1917 under the old and new calendar conventions then in transition; the legal commemorative date is April 27. Their decision favoured Latgale’s union with Vidzeme and Kurzeme in a future autonomous Latvia while protecting Latgalian cultural and linguistic interests. Modern observance should therefore neither erase regional difference nor imply a separate state project. The date remains a working day, and events are strongest in Rēzekne and Latgale.

How Latgale Congress Day is observed

A national commemoration day, not a public holiday; events are particularly visible in Latgale. Normal schedules continue, with the strongest public programmes usually organised in Latgale and Rēzekne.

Traditions of Latgale Congress Day

  • Regional culture

Concerts and local events highlight Latgalian language, music, crafts and history. Latgalian speech and writing are treated as living culture, not museum decoration.

  • Civic education

Schools revisit the congress and its significance for Latvia’s territorial unity. Lessons distinguish the congress from the later November 1918 proclamation of statehood.

  • Rēzekne ceremonies

The city of Rēzekne is a natural focus for commemorations and public talks. Local institutions connect the original meeting place with current regional participation and identity.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Latvian legal and government guidance. Weekend substitutions and local-service schedules should be confirmed against the annual official calendar.
