When is Day of Arafah?

In 2026, Day of Arafah falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Day of Arafah

Arafah falls on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah, before Eid al-Adha. For pilgrims it centres on standing at the plain of Arafat near Mecca in supplication, a core Hajj rite. Muslims elsewhere may fast voluntarily, pray or follow broadcasts, but a pilgrim's required standing and home observance are not the same practice.

Libya treats Arafah as its own official holiday. Households may use it for worship and final preparation: arranging food, visiting markets, contacting relatives or preparing for sacrifice where intended and affordable. Shopping and travel vary with prices, security, place and resources.

Law No. 5 expressly lists Arafah. GNU Decision No. 231 fixed Tuesday, May 26 in 2026 and kept urgent humanitarian and security facilities operating with compensation rights preserved. Because executive structures are divided, that GNU decision should not be assumed to settle every eastern institution's hours; local notices remain necessary.

How Day of Arafah is observed

Official Arafah holiday shown for Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from Libya's Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 decision. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Libya should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of Day of Arafah

  • Prayer and voluntary fasting

Non-pilgrims may fast, read scripture and make supplication according to health and guidance. Local organisations may arrange ceremonies, performances or educational events that explain the occasion and keep its meaning visible.

  • Following Hajj

Families may follow coverage from Arafat or contact relatives on pilgrimage. Food, visits, music or shared activities give the observance an everyday form that can differ between regions and generations.

  • Eid preparation

Households complete shopping and meal plans without implying every family buys or sacrifices an animal. Schools, media and cultural institutions may revisit the history behind the date, connecting established traditions with present-day discussion.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Libya official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Libya may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
