When is Europe Day?
In 2026, Europe Day falls on Saturday, May 9, 2026. It is classified here as a Luxembourg public holiday.
History of Europe Day
Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, a proposal that became a founding step in European integration. Luxembourg gives the date unusual legal weight: it is the only EU member state to make May 9 a statutory public holiday.
That choice reflects Luxembourg’s central place in the European project. The country hosts major EU institutions and has long linked its prosperity, multilingual society and political identity to cross-border cooperation. Europe Day is therefore both an EU anniversary and a distinctly Luxembourgish public occasion.
Europe Day entered Luxembourg’s statutory calendar through the law of 25 April 2019 and was first observed as a legal holiday that year. The choice also reflects Robert Schuman’s close Luxembourg connections and the Grand Duchy’s role as a seat of EU institutions. When May 9 falls on a weekend, as in 2026, the holiday remains dated May 9 while eligible employees receive compensatory leave under Luxembourg employment law.
How Europe Day is observed
A nationwide statutory public holiday on May 9. It should not be confused with a general EU-wide day off, as Luxembourg is exceptional in giving it legal public-holiday status. A non-working-day clash creates compensatory leave rather than moving the holiday’s calendar date.
Traditions of Europe Day
European open days
Institutions and cultural organisations may offer visits, exhibitions and family programmes. EU bodies publish their own access and security arrangements for each programme.
Cross-border life
Residents use the date to reflect the everyday links between Luxembourg and its neighbouring regions. Many residents and commuters experience European integration as an everyday reality.
Civic discussion
Schools and organisations explore European history, languages and democratic cooperation. Events connect the Schuman Declaration with current democratic choices and responsibilities.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Luxembourg labour and public-holiday guidance. Bank-sector observances and employer arrangements can differ from statutory national public holidays.
