When is National Day?

In 2026, National Day falls on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. It is classified here as a Luxembourg public holiday.

History of National Day

Luxembourg celebrates its National Day on 23 June, officially described in law as the public celebration of the Grand Duke’s birthday. The wording matters: the fixed date is not the current sovereign’s actual birthday, but a ceremonial date chosen to give the country a dependable summer national festival.

The custom of marking the sovereign’s birthday reaches back to the eighteenth century. Under Grand Duchess Charlotte, the celebration fell on her January birthday; a Grand Ducal order in 1961 moved it to 23 June for a more favourable season. Today it combines civic speeches, parades, military ceremony, religious observance and communal celebration.

The legal expression is the public celebration of the Grand Duke’s birthday, while National Day and Nationalfeierdag are common names. The fixed date was created by Grand Ducal order in 1961 after Grand Duchess Charlotte’s January birthday had made outdoor celebrations difficult. Luxembourg retained June 23 under later sovereigns. The current Grand Duke’s actual birthday is not the test for the holiday, and no yearly proclamation is needed.

How National Day is observed

A nationwide statutory public holiday on June 23. National celebrations begin the preceding evening and public services, transport and retail schedules may change. A non-working-day clash creates compensatory leave rather than moving the holiday’s calendar date.

Traditions of National Day

  • Official ceremony

National authorities gather at the Philharmonie for speeches and a formal celebration. The Grand Duke, parliamentary president and prime minister traditionally address invited guests.

  • Parades and Te Deum

The programme includes military and civilian ceremony, with a Te Deum held at the cathedral. These formal elements occur on June 23 rather than during the previous evening’s street festival.

  • Fireworks and flags

Communities celebrate with flags, concerts and the highly visible eve-of-holiday fireworks. The fireworks belong to June 22, while flags remain visible throughout the national celebration.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Luxembourg labour and public-holiday guidance. Bank-sector observances and employer arrangements can differ from statutory national public holidays.
