When is National Day?

In 2026, National Day falls on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Macao public holiday.

History of National Day

National Day in Macao uses the calendar identity “National Day”. marks the state anniversary associated with the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. In Macao it entered the post-handover civic calendar through Executive Order No. 60/2000 and Labour Relations Law Article 44. The day should be described as a current legal and civic anniversary without turning official ceremony into a complete account of modern Chinese history.

Government buildings display flags and official programmes may include receptions, cultural events or fireworks subject to annual confirmation. The date begins a major mainland travel period, increasing visitor demand in Macao even though the territory does not copy mainland Golden Week’s make-up workdays. Hotels, casinos, restaurants and transport can be especially busy.

Thursday, October 1 is obligatory for private employees; Friday, October 2 is a separate Macao public holiday but not Article 44-mandatory. Article 44 of the Labour Relations Law lists this as an obligatory holiday: covered private employees are excused from work without losing basic remuneration. Work may still be required for specified continuity, unforeseen workload or force-majeure reasons, with the compensation and rest protections in Article 45. Public employees follow the separate administration calendar, and banks, gaming, hospitality, transport, health care and other essential or visitor-facing services publish their own operating arrangements.
