When is Africa Day?
In 2026, Africa Day falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Africa Day
Africa Day marks May 25, 1963, when 32 independent African states adopted the charter establishing the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa. The founders placed decolonisation, opposition to apartheid, sovereignty and continental cooperation at the centre of the organisation, which was succeeded by the African Union in 2002.
Mali was one of the OAU’s founding members and makes May 25 a legal holiday. The date can support cultural celebration and discussion of integration, but it is also a time to examine the gap between pan-African aspirations and lived political, economic and security conditions rather than presenting unity as a completed project.
Africa Day is covered by Law 05-040: Article 1 names the holiday, and Article 3 makes legal holidays non-working and paid. Article 2 allows the Government to declare the following working day a holiday for certain feasts, but it creates no automatic Saturday, Sunday or Monday substitution. An extra day therefore appears only when an annual government notice expressly grants it.
How Africa Day is observed
Statutory public holiday on Monday, May 25, 2026; continental and Malian programmes are announced under the year’s theme.
Traditions of Africa Day
Community practice
Schools, cultural groups and households may explore African history through discussion, music, dress, food or media without reducing the continent to one culture. Practice varies by locality, faith community and household; this is not a claim that every Malian participates in the same way.
Public observance
Government, African Union institutions and civil-society organisations may hold panels, flag events, exhibitions or broadcasts on the annual theme. The actual venue, time and access conditions come from the organiser’s current notice.
Planning the date
Check whether a specific programme is public and whether local institutions combine the Monday holiday with weekend schedules. Public transport, markets, essential services and private employers can keep separate schedules.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Mali official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Mali may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
