When is New Year's Day?
In 2026, New Year's Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of New Year's Day
New Year’s Day is one of the national holidays established by title 1 of the FSM Code and applies throughout Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The civil date arrived through successive foreign administrations, but contemporary observance belongs to families and communities across the federation. It follows Christmas and often continues a season of church activity, visiting and travel between islands or villages.
The Federated States of Micronesia is a constitutional federation, not a culturally uniform island group. Languages, church traditions, customary responsibilities and practical schedules differ among and within the four states. A shared January 1 holiday therefore creates common time away from National Government work without prescribing one menu, ceremony or religious practice for everyone.
In 2026 January 1 falls on Thursday. Section 602 of the national holiday law transfers a listed Saturday holiday to Friday and a listed Sunday holiday to Monday, so no transfer applies that year. The statute governs National Government employees and officials; state governments recognise national holidays but administer their own services, while private employers, transport, health care and shops may follow contracts, licences and local operating needs.
How New Year's Day is observed
Thursday, January 1 is the 2026 national holiday. National Government offices observe the date, while state services and private employers publish their own operating arrangements.
Traditions of New Year's Day
Church and thanksgiving
Participating congregations may begin the civil year with worship, singing and prayer, while non-participating households observe the public break differently.
Family visits
Relatives continue Christmas-season meals and visits, adapting plans to island distances, weather, transport capacity and customary family responsibilities.
Local schedule checks
Residents confirm state offices, flights, boats, shops and health services because a national holiday does not produce identical hours everywhere.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Micronesia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Micronesia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
