When is National Flag Day?

In 2026, National Flag Day falls on Friday, July 10, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of National Flag Day

National Flag Day of Mongolia is observed on July 10, immediately before the main Naadam festivities. The day was established in 2008 to encourage respect for the State Flag and its Soyombo emblem, a powerful symbol of Mongolian independence, continuity and aspiration. The modern flag has been used since 1992, though Mongolia’s state symbols have changed across earlier political eras.

Its placing beside Naadam gives the observance a particularly public character. Flag-raising ceremonies and honour guards can lead into the national-festival atmosphere, linking civic identity with heritage and summer celebration. It is an observance rather than a separate statutory day off, although it coincides with the first day of the legal Naadam holiday period.

The red-blue-red flag adopted with Mongolia’s democratic Constitution retains the Soyombo on its hoist-side red panel while removing the socialist star used on the previous design. July 10 was added to the national observance list in 2009. Since a 2022 amendment separately extended the statutory Naadam holiday to July 10–15, Flag Day now falls on a legal day off for Naadam, but its civic identity and ceremonies remain distinct from the sports festival and the July 11 revolutionary anniversary.

How National Flag Day is observed
