When is Njegoš Day?

In 2026, Njegoš Day falls on Friday, November 13, 2026. It is classified here as a Montenegrin public holiday.

History of Njegoš Day

Njegoš Day marks the 13 November 1813 birth of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the prince-bishop, ruler, poet and philosopher from Njeguši. His rule developed Montenegro’s Senate, courts, taxation, schooling and printing, while The Mountain Wreath and The Ray of the Microcosm became central, and sometimes debated, works of South Slavic literature.

The holiday directs the national calendar toward literature, philosophy and education. It was created as a single day in 2021, but a 2023 amendment deleted that exception, restoring the usual two-day treatment for November 13 and 14. Libraries, schools and museums now use both dates for readings, exhibitions and discussion of Njegoš’s complex legacy.

Under Montenegro’s current Law on State and Other Holidays, Njegoš Day belongs to a two-day non-working period comprising the named date and the following day. If the first date is Sunday, the next two days become non-working; if only the second date is Sunday, the next working day is substituted. Public-interest and continuous-process services may operate, so legal holiday status never guarantees identical opening hours for transport, healthcare, hospitality, shops or attractions.

How Njegoš Day is observed

A nationwide non-working holiday on the principal date, subject to Montenegro’s two-day Sunday-substitution formula. Employees and visitors should confirm the practical schedule with the relevant employer, institution or service.
