When is Culturama Day?
In 2026, Culturama Day falls on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. It is a Saint Kitts and Nevis public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Culturama Day
Culturama is Nevis’s premier cultural festival within Saint Kitts and Nevis. First celebrated in 1974, it was established to assert Nevisian identity while recognising emancipation from slavery. The Culturama Secretariat defines its mission around increasing cultural awareness, reviving and preserving heritage, supporting creative talent and stimulating the island economy. That institutional purpose makes the festival more than a generic summer carnival or visitor entertainment.
Kaiso, junior performance, pageantry, costume design, dance, drama, food, craft and folklore give Nevisian practitioners a public stage. Workshops and competitions transmit skills, while vendors and small businesses share in festival activity. Nevisians living abroad also return during the season, so Culturama operates as a homecoming that renews family and island connections as well as a programme of ticketed and street events.
The current Nevis Island Administration calendar lists Culturama Day on the Tuesday after Emancipation Day. It is not a permanent named entry in the Public Holidays Act; instead, the Act permits the Governor-General to proclaim a special holiday for the state or an island, as occurred for Culturama’s fiftieth anniversary. The date formula and each year’s events should therefore be confirmed from the official NIA calendar and festival programme.
How Culturama Day is observed

Traditions of Culturama Day
Kaiso competition
Nevisian calypsonians use melody, wit and social commentary in competitions that preserve local voices and develop younger performers through junior kaiso.
Costumes and pageantry
Designers, contestants and performance groups present costumes, dance and stagecraft developed through months of preparation across Nevisian communities.
Food, craft and small business
Festival fairs give cooks, artisans, vendors and entrepreneurs opportunities to present Nevisian products while sharing the economic benefits of Culturama.
Homecoming and heritage
Nevisians living abroad return for the festival, renewing family connections while participating in an event created to strengthen island identity.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Saint Kitts and Nevis Public Holidays Act. Saint Kitts and Nevis issues annual notices and Nevis may publish separate practical guidance for local celebrations.
